Undoubtedly you will have noticed via the news networks the escalating security threats in the Red Sea. Here at AWL, we are keeping a very close eye on the situation which continues to develop by the day. It has been noted by us that most if not all, large industry ocean carriers to include Hapag Lloyd, Maersk, CMA & MSC have started to suspend operations through the Red Sea which is the major transit route from the Far East to Europe and redirecting their vessels via the Cape of Good Hope. This is obviously a sensible thing to do amid the safety concerns considering the attacks from the Houthi rebels in the Red Sea on their vessels, but it is not without consequence to global trade itself.

Re-routing vessels around the Cape is expected to add at least 10 days to the Westbound voyage time of the Asia-North Europe loop. This change will undoubtedly have its challenges with a spike in freight rates already starting to show along with added war risk surcharges to their invoices. Some industry experts are warning depending on the scale and duration of this disruption, ocean freight rates could increase by anything from 75 / 100% which we sincerely hope not to be the case but, we need for you to be aware.

Obviously, this is entirely out of AWL’s control, but we are committed to actively monitoring the situation and ensure we provide updates & adaptability to your supply chain when and where possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about your shipments, please reach out to us where we are on hand to provide you with an update.

EU – UK Changes from January 1st

Standard import declarations will now be required at the entry point into the UK for all goods.  The simplified method of using CFSP (deferred declarations) discontinues at the end of this year and can no longer be deferred as was the case in 2021.  CFSP declarations are only permitted if you are authorised by HMRC to do so.
Customs will now begin checks on goods imported from the EU.  This involves full customs border controls on any products selected for a documentary or physical examination.  Data quality on commodity codes, product origin (especially if claiming preferential origin as part of the EU-UK TCA) and product valuation are key areas of customs focus – if you would like to ask us about customs health checks of commodity codes and documentation you currently use, please contact us here.
Notification requirements will be implemented on agricultural food products.  This will require the GB importer, or person responsible for the import, to be registered in IPAFF’s.  This system is used for notifying UK authorities of movements of live animals, animal products, and high-risk food and feed not of animal origin, into GB from the EU.
The importers advice declaration which allowed an importer to state where goods originated in order to gain Duty free preference from the EU ends.  They will now need to provide evidence at time of import such as a statement of origin of their product.
